I've heard bad for you and cotton swabs damage your hearing. Is that true? If so, why are they still sell?

The box says not to use it in your ear canal, but everyone does anyway. They are used for many other reasons, besides the clutter in your ear.
I used to dry the ears after a shower - I eat a little cotton and insert gently - it absorbs water like a sponge. Just Not While I'm digging around there - that the wax or perforated ear drum packs, as you say.
Be used not only for the ears!
